The history of the Ecliptic universe spans from an age of open divine intervention to a modern age of myth. What began as a direct conflict between Angels and Demons evolved through the emergence of the first Ecliptic beings, leading to a complex society of cooperation and balance.
This world, at present, can be considered an "urban fantasy" in which Entities exist as myths and legends to a modern world much like ours, with the present day being the same as ours. That said, while religion still differs from culture to culture, Entities (Angels and Demons, mostly) feature prominently in superstition and it is common for even the most secular to have a sense that there is something supernatural in the world.
Note: the BCE/CE notation for the Gregorian Calendar is used here for ease of reference. The aether planes do not exhibit natural cycles of time (day/night, seasons, etc.) so many Entities that solely reside in the aether planes are not concerned about the division of time.
From the dawn of existence, all planes existed in the universe. As life slowly evolved in the physical plane, Angels slowly formed in the Plane of Light and Demons slowly formed in the Plane of Darkness. During this period, the planes of Light and Darkness were without form or structure—they were simply vast expanses of pure primal energy. Urivae was among the first Demons who constructed Umbra, and Ilumiel was among the first Angels who constructed Lux.
As more Entities manifested, collective consciousness grew, and the first connections between Angels and between Demons began to form. Yet each realm remained unaware of the other's existence, and neither had discovered the physical plane where mortal souls dwelled.
As the first humans evolved on the physical plane, their complex souls created ripples across the metaphysical fabric of existence. Angels sensed the potential of these souls for ascension, and Demons sensed the faint traces of corruption. Led by their instinctual purpose, Entities from both realms ventured into the physical plane, encountering primitive human societies.
Ilumiel was among the first Angels to interact with humans, gently guiding them toward language development and concepts of harmony and community. Meanwhile, Urivae and other early Demons observed from the shadows, identifying and consuming the first truly corrupt souls.
For a brief period, Angels and Demons operated in the physical plane without awareness of each other. This changed within a century or so, when an Angel and Demon simultaneously approached the same soul—one seeing potential for growth, the other sensing emerging corruption.
Following first contact, both Angel and Demon societies underwent profound transformations. Urivae and Ilumiel, having glimpsed the other side of existence, returned to their respective planes with new understanding. They began to push for more structure in their society, beginning the shift towards the principles and societal structures of modern times.
The deliberation of Angels was slow but steady as they reached their decisions, conceptualizing the Luminous Council and their principles.
Demons saw significant power struggles after it was discovered that the 'mark' Urivae bore could be transferred to another Demon through defeat. Urivae was displaced by a Demon that was more hostile towards the newly-discovered Angels, though that Demon was also usurped in time. Urivae, after a long time spent in the physical plane hunting souls, returned to retake their mark and establish the court and rotation system more neatly.
During this period, Urivae and Ilumiel occasionally encountered each other in the physical plane. Though representing opposing forces, they shared insights about their respective kinds, establishing a tenuous understanding that would, millennia later, help pave the way for the Armistice.
By 10,000 BCE, both Angel and Demon societies had stabilized their distinct approaches to soul guidance and collection.
In the earliest recorded history, Angels and Demons operated openly among mortals, each pursuing their intrinsic purposes. Angels sought to guide souls toward ascension through direct intervention, while Demons hunted corrupt souls with little subtlety. In this era, both Angels and Demons displayed dramatic shows of power. Middling souls who were neither fully corrupt nor near ascendance were a sort of "battleground" between Light and Dark. Angels would try to sway them towards ascendance, and Demons might try to sway them towards corruption in hopes of getting more souls that were easy to take. Some Demons would even try to take souls with only slight amounts of corruption, leading to some Angels and Demons entering direct conflict, which often led to significant collateral damage.
The devastation caused by conflicts between Angels and Demons led to the realization that their battles could potentially destroy the very world they operated in. This led to the First Armistice, where Angels and Demons established fundamental rules of engagement. Angels agreed to focus their efforts on souls without corruption, while Demons would only consume souls that were fully corrupt. This created a more stable system, though it left souls in the middle largely unguided, often leading to repeated reincarnation cycles.
The first recorded emergence of an Ecliptic was Sekriel, an Angel who was dissatisfied with the divide between Light and Dark and decided to embrace the Darkness. At first, neither Angels nor Demons knew what to do with them, and Sekriel did not fully understand their existence. However, they spoke of accepting the Twilight, an in-between state—that Light and Darkness were not truly as divided as they all thought. Some Entities were struck by their words, and others such as Bellat soon embraced a twilight state as well. The initial numbers of Ecliptic were few, but it soon became clear that they were incredibly powerful, having access to both the collective power of Angels and having the ability to consume souls. This led to fear and suspicion among both Angels and Demons, and around 790 BCE, those who became Ecliptic were cast out from Lux and Umbra; some Angels and Demons even took it upon themselves to drive the Ecliptic out of the Planes of Light and Darkness entirely.
Sekriel soon discovered the Plane of Twilight and began gathering the Ecliptic and guiding them there. As more Ecliptic resided in the Plane of Twilight, some naturally-formed Ecliptic came into being as well. Around 780 BCE, Sekriel and Bellat constructed Vespertine. Over the next few centuries, more Ecliptic beings emerged, though they remained few in number. As they carved out their own place in the universe, acting on the middling souls left neglected, Sekriel and Bellat gathered the Ecliptic and proposed that they take a stance and negotiate with Angel and Demon societies to advocate for more nuanced approaches to guiding souls. Despite the initial ostracism, their capabilities and their unique insights on both Light and Dark eventually earned them a hearing from both sides.
With the Ecliptic opening communications between all factions of Entities—Angels, Demons, and the Ecliptic—a period of philosophical development and experimentation. Different Entities tried different approaches in a more systematic way to understand how and why souls ascend or become corrupt. Some continued direct intervention, some advocated for non-interference except for the most extreme cases, and some—mostly the Ecliptic—demonstrated more balanced approaches.
From this experimentation, the Entities came to understand that souls needed space for self-determination, and that leaving society to their own devices would lead to the irredeemably corrupt revealing themselves on their own. Still, some interference would help self-actualized souls ascend and reveal the corrupt.
During this time, the first naturally-born Ecliptic beings appeared, though the Ecliptic remained rare. Still, their existences gradually normalized the idea that Light and Dark could coexist within a single being. The three societies began to develop formal ways of working together, establishing the foundations of modern Entity society.
As human society developed and became more structured, Entities gradually adopted more subtle approaches to their work as a whole. After an era of experimentation, they understood that souls tend to ascend more successfully when given space for genuine self-actualization, and that the corrupt would reveal themselves when they did not fear the divine.
In some places of the world, Entities became myth; in other places, they were still understood as real parts of the world. As the years passed, more Entities disguised themselves as humans and society leaned more towards labeling them as myths and legends, but there are still places and organizations that might worship or even work with them.
Today, the Ecliptic hold a respected position in Entity society, though they typically maintain a degree of independence. Their power is no longer feared but recognized as a natural part of the world's balance. Naturally-born Ecliptic are seen as rare but natural occurrences, while those who transition are viewed with respect for choosing a path of balance.
The relationship between Angels, Demons, and the Ecliptic continues to evolve, with each group maintaining their distinct roles while working together in an interlocked society. This cooperation has led to more efficient methods of helping souls ascend or identifying truly corrupt souls for consumption.
